What characteristics make an organization a team-based organization? What leadership styles are used within that organization? Team-based organizations denote the non-traditional and innovative workplaces that rely on the teams to attain their objectives. To become a team-based organization, an establishment must have several key traits. These include mutual trust, shared responsibility for performance, shared accountability towards self-management, shared leadership, as well as employee empowerment in goal-setting, planning, and organization. Managers and supervisors in team-based organizations apply different leadership styles in the dispensation of their interpersonal, commercial, and strategic duties. The most used leadership styles in team-based organizations include visionary, dictatorial, partner, enabler, collaboration, and parental leadership styles. The leaders in such organizations apply these styles based on a predetermined objective. For instance, leaders who do not wish to create a trust or tolerate risk-taking often use a dictatorial leadership style (Prasad, 2001).

The team-based influences leadership influence and power in a unique way. In particular, team-based organization keeps the number of relationships under the supervision of a leader low because every team accounts for one relationship as opposed to having multiple relationships for individual members. Note that leaders lose control as the span of control widens. When working in team-based settings, the leader has a duty to foster teamwork. To attain that goal, leaders design physical structures that can facilitate communication amongst all team members (Mohrman, 1997). In addition, they initiate ceremonies and rituals that bring the key players together. They also design and implement reward systems to use team recognition as a source of motivation. These are personal opinions that are mostly informed by the literature from the theory of leadership.
