Creativity and innovation are important aspects of modern business. Creativity and innovativeness denote the ability to create and invent something appropriate and viable that can be used by entrepreneurs to start new businesses. In addition, creativity and innovativeness empower companies to sustain the best business and reach their goals.  In the contemporary business world, leaders have a duty to enhance creativity and innovativeness to give their organizations a competitive advantage over their rivals (Lencioni, 2002). Last summer, I worked as a volunteer for a local NGO that was giving aid to survivors of a flood catastrophe. I was assigned to a group led by a dictator. He could make all the decisions and pose them to the group without making consultations.

He could not embrace diversity even though he was managing a team comprising of multicultural members. He viewed the sociocultural differences amongst members as weak points. His methods of leadership led to team stagnation. Food and the aid could not reach the survivors on time. Volunteers could not adapt to emergent situations. Fortunately, an executive member appointed me to assume leadership after several complaints from the team. To foster creativity and innovation, the team began holding brainstorming sessions. During such meetings, we deliberated on the serious challenges that affected the team during normal and emergency settings (Sinek, 2009). Members raised their points, opinions, views, and suggestions freely and without judgment. I also gave members the freedom to make decisions in times of emergencies. The team improved greatly specifically in food distribution, crisis management, and response to other humanitarian issues (Maxwell, 2005).
